Lamazou, La Delice & Bouchon Bakery - Friday's Eats

Today started off very, very well. As you know, I've spent the last month commuting to Weschester (and Princeton, NJ yesterday) for work. That comes out to just over 3 hours in commuting a day...ridiculous, cause I did was hired to work in the MANHATTAN office.

Photo shot outside the Goldman Sachs office in Princeton, NJ. Snow!! 4pm, Thursday afternoon.

Not the tri-state area. Oh well. Complaining gets you nowhere, so we shall dance on to the fun stuff! I woke up at the delicious hour of 8am (two hours later than usual cause there was no need for Metro North rides today!!!) and set off to our 42nd & Madison office - a gorgeous building, if I may remark. I took care of morning work, but really, my mind was focused on one subject since last night's dinner: what's for lunch? I browsed endless blogs, adding to my never ending mental list, and finally. I decided.

LAMAZOU. Lynn first told me about this tiny sandwich and cheese shop when we first met last Sunday. She even took me in for a quick peek, introduced me to the owners, a kind elderly couple with genuine love for their work.

A few Google searches will show you that I'm not the only one who feels this way. I came in around 1pm this afternoon, stomach ready for the EATS. hehe. Selecting from the myriad of tempting options proved to be rather difficult - I wish I could have a bite of every sandwich! But after narrowing it down to the smoked salmon with lemon dressing, capers, onions, and cornichons and the chicken salad, cheddar, and sundried tomatoes. I decided on the chicken salad, just cause chicken + cheddar combo sounded amazing.

I ordered a half size (just $5!) which turned out to be a very big half, surely the whole size would suffice for lunch and dinner (or lunch and breakfast, however you prefer ;) There are nine bread options, but I went with the cibatta per the owner's recommendation. I'd suggest you do the same and seek out the advice of the owners.

Stunning, isn't it?! Creamy pepper chicken salad speckled with celery and tiny bits of roasted red pepper is luxuriously spooned over the top and bottom Balthlazar ciabatta bread, a layer of chopped sundried tomatoes, and sliced cheddar round it out.

And OH! The cheddar, I know you'd just love it! You really would. The layers of thinly sliced cheddar must stand at least three fourths of an inch high, and my dear, how they were sliced! So thin that the words 'paper thin' would do no justification. It was glorious! To bite it all at once, and get a bit of everything, is truly an orgasmic experience. The crusty ciabatta, sharp cheddar sinking into the seemingly endless depths of savoury chicken, just the right kick of pepper, only cut by a sharp sweet hit of sundried tomatoes. You must give it a try. I'll be back for sure - even tomorrow maybe!

I was in such a good mood after purchasing the sandwich that I thought to stop in at the Italian bakery next door to purchase a few biscotti for a dessert. I've been on a biscotti kick for the last few weeks and find myself craving them at least once a day, hehe. I walked into the empty bakery, staffed by the owner and two employees. The scent inside the bakery was sheer heaven, but visually, the products looked less appealing. I took out my point-and-shoot to grab a quick photo of the biscotti. Instantly I heard a loud voice from across the room, "STOP TAKING PHOTOS!! HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF I CAME IN YOUR HOME, INVADED YOUR PRIVACY AND TOOK PICURES???!!!" Shit, I was literally shaking. My face was bright red. And I felt like crying. The bakery was deathly quiet when I entered and all of a sudden it filled with a booming angry voice directed at me. I didn't know what to do but apologize over and over again and offer to delete the photos. The only thing I wanted to do at that instant was run out and never return. But at the same time I felt guilty. So I bought some biscotti in hopes of winning back favour of the owner...even though I didn't feel like I did anything wrong...

Sigh. I took the biscotti back to the office with me, but I could not bring myself to eat it. I was embarrassed. And angry. And everything not good. Was I in the wrong? Was the yelling necessary? If he had just kindly asked, or quietly asked, heck, just any normal tone of voice, I'd feel more guilty than mad. But man, he was screaming at the top of his lungs. The experience alone spoiled my appetite for the biscotti. Here they lay. Pathetic and unwanted. From left to right: pecan, chocolate hazelnut, walnut, and marbled chocolate. I don't think I'll be eating any of them today...maybe tomorrow. Maybe never. But one thing's for sure, unless they are mind-blowingly awesome, I won't be returning. (note: just ate the marbled chocolate biscotti. It's of the softer breed, a turnoff. I like biscotti extra crunchy and strong enough to hold up for dunking. This failed. Chocolate flavour was at the right balancing degree between too rich and just enough to notice, but it's sweeter than the norm.)

Outside the Time Warner Center, 4pm Friday

I shoved the biscotti underneath my office desk and spent the next few hours tying up audit work for the client. The work itself if pretty straightforward, if not tedious, but I'm grateful I for opportunity to work with nice people. In the end, I feel as if the people you work with matter more than the actual work itself. Around 3:30pm, my senior stopped by and told me I could leave for the weekend if I was done! Can you imagine that?! I was so delighted, I blasted out of the office, straight into the snow, up the D train and to the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle.

I did some shopping at Whole Foods, browsed a few clothing stores before heading upstairs to eye the new Illy display of espresso cups. I wish I could move this to my apartment! hehe...though I doubt it would fit!

Up another level at the Bouchon Bakery, I decided that a Friday treat was in order (after all, I've never been released this early!!!). The lines at the bakery counter was totally nutso, and I waited for a good 15 minutes before placing my order. The staff however, was extremely efficient despite the holiday crowds, they were a very smooth crew.

Pastry selections, from left to right: cream cheese danish with orange marmalade, pesto croissant, chocolate bouchon, and a fruit cake loaf. I never ceased to be amazed by the delicious options in this city. Everyday is a new surprise. You wake up in crazy wonderful city and never know what will happen. I feel I can appreciate this more after my last two years of boredom in terms of human interaction in Claremont, California (minus summers and winters in Hawaii). Without a car in SoCal you can do absolutely nothing. NOTHING. And in a school as small as Claremont McKenna and even Pomona (where I took half my classes) you run into the same people at least a dozen times a day. And nothing new ever happened. A place of no change. Some like it that way, and I respect their view. But it's not for me. I hope boredom will never come here, because the minute that happens I have to move...so far we are on a good track :)

Whoops!
Sorry about the tangent, didn't see that coming!
heheh.

This was what I had in mind: the Chocolate Bouchon. I'm sure you've heard of it? Maybe here? Here? or even here? I feel like I am the only person on earth who has never had this bouchon. Mmmm. A reliable recipe here for you!

It's just the right size for a single diner. A dark afternoon bite of sheer chocolately indulgence. It's to be eaten perched over the second floor railing of the Time Warner Center, looking our the glass windows, watching the snow fall and Christmas lights flash though a rainbow of colours. This way, you taste the richness of a fallen soufflé gone a million times more intense, chocolate chip studded innards and crisp crust, dusted with the faintest bit of powdered sugar. To eat alone is divine.

To eat alone, at least for me, usually means I end up eating more than I usually would. Teehee. I have absolutely no restraint when it comes to bakeries, especially during the pre-dinner witching hour. It's terrible. And wonderful at the same time. I went back to the bakery counter and claimed the second to last Nutter Butter. Fate? Perhaps! I was astounded by the sheer weight of this cookie as it was handed to me over the counter. This was not a cookie. This was a meal! But I ate it all anyways. You can always count on me ;) The Nutter Butter was as delectable as everyone proclaims. No lies. Two hearty oat studded peanut butter cookies sandwiching a blissfully smooth filling of whipped peanut butter. The cookies tasted genuine, real and honest. Those are the type of cookies I love. Most importantly, the twist of salt and crunch of chopped peanuts was a key player in saving the cookies from venturing to the sweet side. And when I said hearty, I'm not kidding. This darling is HEAVY. Like super duper. Stomach did not feel so happy afterwards, but tongue? Ah, yes, the tongue was very content.

Right after tucking away the last bite of Nutter Butter, crumbs littering my dress, I felt an urgent NEED. A CRAVING for...DIET PEPSI. This is not the first time something like this has happened to me. I don't drink soda on often, but once in a while (every two months I suppose?), I eat the right/wrong combination of things and the right/wrong time, and then, all of a sudden nothing will do but SODA. I'll take Coke or Pepsi. I don't discriminate. But I do prefer diet over regular when it comes to the darker sodas. That's just how I work.

So I waited in line at the Dean & Deluca cafe nestled in Borders, right around the corner. While in line, I took to eyeing the many pastry options...

...knishes from Yonah Schimmel, Sullivan Street Pizzas, brownies & magic bars from Betsy's Place, and lemon bars & cheesecakes from Mother Fortune.

...$5 for a cupcake? Geebezus. Even though Two Little Red Hens bakes quality cupcakes, you'll never catch me forking over $5 for one!

I was nearly lured in by a slice of blueberry or apple crumb cake from Sweet Sam's, and almost surrendered to fanciful whims...

But alas, all I wanted was a Diet Pepsi. Sooo delicious! ;)

Hope you have a good weekend!

Yay! You went to Bouchon and got yourself the Nutter Butter Cookie! It's awesome and yes, it's a delicious gut bomb.

Even though their bouchon is awesome unadulterated, what if you just warm it slightly and scooped some vanilla ice cream on top...man, I'm getting hungry by these thoughts.

Anyways, happy Friday (and weekend) to you! :)

In addendum, I understand how you felt at that bakery. It does feel embarrassing and guilty for the first few times when that happens. You can ask beforehand?

When it comes to restaurants, most leave me alone. Some ask what's it for (e.g. magazines), or just give me looks and other diners talk about me (in regards to my huge camera).

In all, as you do this a myriad of times you'll get used to it. Just respect their wishes and move along.

Lamazou, that sounds so french... there's a pretty famous skipper turned painter/illustrator of travel sketchbooks with the same name here!

Sorry for your misadventure in the other bakery...

And wow the Illy display picture is really impressive, I like the concept too!

First of all, that Italian bakery is not a private home, it's a store open to the public. There'S no invasion of privacy. Second of all, he didn't have to yell and scream. Next time someone screams at you for taking their shop pictures, apologize and then tell them it's rude of them to yell. If there's not a sign to say photography is not allowed, then you are not breaking any rules. Lastly, DON'T EVER GIVE BUSINESS TO THOSE WHO YELL AT YOU. These assXXXXX don't deserve to make money out of you.

Boo to the nasty guy! I wouldn't have bought anything.

I'm glad everything else you ate on Friday was good :) That sandwich especially looks good, they sure don't make them like that here.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF I CAME INTO YOUR BUSINESS AND POSTED PICTURES OF IT ON THE INTERNET SO THAT OTHERS MIGHT CHOOSE TO VISIT YOUR BUSINESS AND GIVE YOU MORE BUSINESS!?!?

HUH!!

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello. Bit a of a lurker here, but your blog inspires me. It really really intensifies my desire to either visit New York again or to live there (hopefully for grad school). Your solitary jaunts around the city leave me completely green with envy!

I think I spend 30% of my time at work reading food blogs just to build up my list of places to try as well.

I'm not sure if they have this at Bouchon all the time or not but a couple of weeks ago I got a pear and chocolate moose with caramel that was amazing. The macaroons there were pretty meh though.

Was this his home? No! What an idiot........he has a business that serves the public, of which you are one of.

Hi Kathy,

Yeesh, what a grump! It made me wonder if he was reported for something bad before! :o

Glad everything else was better!

The sandwiches sound awesome at Lamazou, and a great price to boot! Only thing that makes sandwiches 'perfect'-er would be a bowl of chunky homemade soup!

Hope you have a great weekend with no more screaming grumps!

That's kind of odd comparing his bakery with a home. I mean, he probably wouldn't charge guests in his home for eating the food he serves, right? Or would he? It wouldn't be surprising from a cunt like that. You're right. The screaming was really overboard; like psycho! I had an experience (at a buffet place) very similar to yours but it involved a couple of other patrons, not any of the staff. To make a long story short, I wanted to take a picture of myself but they thought I was taking one of them. Like you, I was too angry to eat normally. Anyways, in your case, rude / psychotic treatment of customers should equate to zero / further patronage.

chubbily said...

Oops! I meant "zero / zero further patronage".

Tina!
hehe, I've never gone to Bouchon as many times as you though, lol! Oh man, next time I'll have to take home a few and do just as you recommended! :)

Hey Yann!
Doesn't the Illy display look awesome?! They were giving out free espresso samples, but the line was far too long for my patience, hehe. I wish they were selling the espresso cup! :)

Hey B!
It was a strange moment cause half of me felt really guilty and the other half was angry and yet another part was just confused! Gah, I figured it'd be better to buy something rather than leave empty handed after being yelled at...won't be returning though...

Hey Kat!
La Delice aside, the entire day was fantastic from the minute I woke up till I fell asleep in my warm bed (heater on, of course! ;)

Doug!
I bet he would have liked it very much! Hehe, oh well. I'm just glad things like that only happen on rare occasions...

Hey Mellisa!
Am so happy you posted instead of lurking this time, hehe! :) I hope you have the opportunity to visit, or better yet, live in NYC! I think it'd be worth choosing a school based on location alone - especially with all this city can offer!

Hey Mike!
That mousse you described sounds incredible - I'm a sucker for pear & chocolate combos! Must get myself over to Bouchon more often, seems they have a pretty frequent rotation of seasonal desserts!

Hey Kirk!
Thank you for confirming that fact! As I stood there at the bakery being scream at, I was starting to get confused as to my rights as a customer...

Hey Cassaendra!
Oh man, they totally make soup at Lamazou!! If the sandwich alone wasn't so filling, I should have gone for a bowl! ...but I'll be back there many times for sure! :)

Hey Chubbily!
Gah, I had embarassing/rude incidents, especially ones that occur in public when you don't feel like you've done anything wrong! Sigh...No more further patronage there...

Kathy,

The guy at the Italian bakery was being an asshole, pure and simple. You responded very maturely. Don't feel bad. It's easy to panic when someone start shouting at you.

Usually, in a situation like this, I either explain that I'm a tourist or that I write reviews for an "online food publication" (the name of which I'm not allowed to release due to company policy). I apologize for upsetting them and ask if it's all right for me to continue. At no point do I offer to delete the photos, since legally they're mine.

A majority of the time, these explanations work and I'm allowed to continue. If the shop isn't comfortable with my photography, but is nice, I give them my patronage. If the owner/staff is rude, I leave. I've never had anyone yell, but I have dealt with assholes. I did have one occasion where I stood up and walked out of the restaurant without ordering.

Remember, you're a customer and a US citizen. You have certain rights. In many cases, your rights actually trump those of the establishment. It helps to know some basic laws regarding public photography in the States:

1) Restaurants and shops, while privately owned, are considered public places. The customers, staff, and owners have no legal expectation of privacy. That what makes surveillance equipment legal in stores. As such, you're allowed to take any photos you like unless...

2) ... the restaurant or shop has a clearly posted sign prohibiting photography. Then, no pictures should be taken. It there are no signs, snap away.

3) If asked to stop photographing by the owner/staff, you should do so immediately. However, the photos themselves, regardless of the content, are the property of the photographer. Any attempt by to take your camera, compel you to delete the photos, etc., is illegal. The only things they can legally do are ask you to stop or ask you to leave.

4) In the event that you're asked to leave, do so immediately. Failure to comply makes you culpable of trespassing. Make sure you pay for any goods or services consumed.

5) As long as you are over 50 feet away from the front of the shop, you can legally photograph the front of the shop. You are no longer trespassing. It's best to place yourself on public land (along a street, sidewalk, etc.) where you won't obstruct traffic.

It's always unpleasant when dealing with mean people. However, knowing the law, and what you're entitled to do as an American, enables you to respond in the proper manner.

Hey Chubbypanda!
Thanks for all that information, that was incredibly helpful! I didn't even know we were entitled to half those rights, haha. Gah, I completely panicked when the owner started yelling - the only thing that I was concerned with at the moment was what I could do to 'make things better'. I'll keep all these tips in mind for future reference. Thank you! :)

Kathy,

I am so sorry to hear about your experience. It is difficult to understand why someone would react in that manner.

In any event, the sandwich sounded wonderful. I am not sure if you visit the Upper West side, but if you do, you must visit Barney Greengrass. The smoked whitefish sandwiches are to die for!

AND Bouchon Bakery! YUM! I am going to have to pay a visit to that place when I am in Vegas...I am so anxious!

Chubbypanda said...

Kathy,

I was so upset by how the owner at La Delice treated you that I wrote this post on photographer rights using my last comment as a starting point. There are two references I cite written by attorney Bert P. Krages II that you might want to take a look at. This One is available online.

Hey Reid!
Gah, I've wanted to visit Barney Greengrass since forever!! Must do that soon, next week perhaps? I'll be sure to get the smoked whitefish! hehe, there's just too much to eat in this city :) ooo, enjoy Bouchon in Vegas! I had breakfast there with my parents three years ago, french toast bread pudding, sourdough waffles and a beautiful dining room! hehe :)

Hey Chubbypanda!
Thank you! I just visted your blog, so much information, and all of it important to know! Thank you for neatly organizing it in writing, a great reference :)

Kathy,

Just came over from CP's blog. Man. I'm so sorry for what happened. If I could, I'd send a barrage of angry monkeys at that guy who yelled at you. My goodness...I'm shaking just thinking about how rude he was to you. I'm glad you took it with such grace and wrote about it so honestly.

Kathy said...

Hey Elmo!
Thanks for your comment, it makes me feel better about the whole situation :) Gladly, nothing like this has ever happened before...and hopefully never will again!

I clicked over from CP's blog too, that yelling dude was so out of line. Aside from the unpleasant episode, looks like you had a delicious rest of the day... the illy cup display is gorgeous, wish it would fit in my place too!

Once at Pinkberry Koreatown, the security guard made me delete the photos I took. But I just took more after he left. Recently at another restaurant, I was asked not to post it on the web b/c the dark lighting doesn't present the food in the best light, but the waiter was polite about it.

If anyone had yelled at me however, I'm not sure I wouldn't have yelled back. And I definitely wouldn't have purchased something! His store is a public place, he should have just politely requested no photos. And then you'd apologize nicely. And bought the biscotti. And that would have been the end of it. No hard feelings. Instead, he's engendered a lot of hard feelings from you and other food bloggers. Not a smart move.

I read about what happened to you on chubbypanda's blog and I just wanted to show my support. I think it's absolutely ridiculous the way you were treated at that bakery. You didn't do anything wrong and all I got to say is that karma is a bitch and sooner or later, that owner will get is just desserts! :)

Kathy said...

Hey Foodhoe!
The pastry incident was the only beeeh part of the day, but I'm glad the rest of the day was especially enjoyable! :) The Illy display was gorgeous!!

Hey Wandering Chopsticks!
The yelling was really unnecessary - I don't feel that the owner or I benefited from that situation…yelling doesn't get you anywhere. Like you said, if he had just requested nicely (or quietly at the very least!), there would have been no hard/awkward feelings. Oh well. Thank god the nice people in this city outnumber the mean ones! :)

Hey Pleasure Palate!
Thanks for your support! :) It was a real bummer though - I rarely run into such rude owners...let's hope it never happens again!
