For Laryngitis

Whole

I lost my voice a few days ago. It's just starting to come back now, but I was mute for most of the weekend. This is especially hard when your job requires that you do a good deal of talking ;) I had to substitute with a lot of hand gesturing and whispering.

With Holes

Mom called yesterday and demanded that I go to Chinatown in search of something she pronounced as "looo hong gua". She instructed me to buy a few of these kiwi-shaped creatures, prick holes with chopsticks, and boil them in water. Drinking the water is supposed to ensure a speedy recovery from a sore throat and bring your voice back.

Innards

The resulting drink is surprisingly sweet and very, very soothing. Best served warm. I wish I knew the English name for these kiwi-balls, but they can be found all over Chinatown (I got mine on Mott, slightly south of Grand Street)...and well-priced at three for $1.00!

my mom brewed this in hot water for me when I lost my voice too. Also, the "coconut flakes" are helpful when you've a big cough. You mainly add them into Chinese soup.

Laryngitis sucks! My remedy is brewing fresh ginger root in hot water and then sweetening with honey. It's delicious, fragrant and it works = )

that looks kind of interesting even for someone who hasn't lost his voice. i wonder if it does any harm if i drink it for no reason...

I swear by these things. Just gallons of it and your throat will be much better. When I last lost my voice, I downed 1.5l a day, got it back in 2 days. Boil it with chrysanthemum and rock sugar if you don't like the taste.

A few years ago, I had completely lost my voice for three days. I had to call home and asked my mum how to fix it in a whisper. Within a day of drinking this stuff, I had recovered a weak, broken version of my voice.

Now I drink this whenever I feel my throat getting scratchy, just in case

My parents use this in various soups all the time. They always said that it was good for me. I guess that it's more widely known than I thought.
