Bespoke Chocolates

I've been buried in busy tax work the last month, leaving rare time for an actual life outside of work. Not to worry though! I still eat dessert like a crazy madwoman - it's a wonder and utter blessing that diabetes has not descended upon me.

Here's a bit on Bespoke and my corresponding Serious Eats Sugar Rush post...

A quick ten-minute walk south from my apartment takes me straight to the doors of Bespoke Chocolates, a very very awesome chocolate shop. My first taste of Rachel's Sea-Salted Caramels took place at her pre-opening party back in November, and I've been craving another one (or dozen) of those chocolates ever since.

Index cards were perhaps not the most ideal stage for shooting this photo, but it was the nearest flat object I could grab before all the sea salt kissed caramel dribbled free. And oooh, how it dribbles! I wish I could pass on a few truffles to my parents, but am not sure how they would fare via mail all the way to Hawai'i.

About a dozen or so different chocolates are stock at any given time, and I've eaten my way though most of them. There's not a single one I dislike, though it's hard not to play favourites...

...especially when it comes to this lush Strawberry-Balsamic chocolate...

...or the Southampton Tea Truffle.

The Hazelnut Praline BonBon is lovely, but almost borderline boring compared to other gorgeous flavours...think along the lines of Rosemary Vanilla and Champagne Cognac.

Shelves against the right wall, harbors a few tempting sweets - among them, chocolate covered Martin pretzels and jars of Chocolate-Hazelnut spread. No sense dipping fingers into the Nutella jar when you have this!

Here's Rachel at work :)

Hope you all have a happy Thursday!

Bus, Skyway Malaysian, Rice Pudding

Skyway Malaysian

Last Saturday, Justin, Darien and I took the bus down to Skyway for dinner. It's been a while since I've sat on a bus - I often forget that it is my second favourite mode of transportation. Walking is the first. Subways are fun, cabs are good/bad depending on your driver and companion, or lack thereof. But bus rides are always a blast.

Why?

While the rest of the world moves at a fly-by-the-minute, warp fast place, the Bus is forever slow. We do not need to move at lightening speed at all times. Bus drivers are friendlier than train conductors and less harried than cab drivers. And because the Bus is so noisy, there is no point in putting in the earphones to my (now defunct) ipod. It forces one to listen to the outside (or would that be, inside Bus?) world.

tea for three

Bus rides, as ours was, even more fun with a friends. The M15 took us down 2nd Avenue, across Houston, and then down Allen Street, dropping our little trio smack at the doors of Skyway.

We got down to business. Justin and I started off with glasses of Soy Bean Milk and Grass Jelly - chilly, refreshing. Find my Serious Eats Sugar Rush on the drink here. I used to have this drink in Hawai'i all the time, less frequently in NYC. Here, milkshakes and prosecco seem to be the liquid of choice. You may refer to my rapidly expanding waistline for visual evidence.

We started off with Roti Canai...

...before moving onto Rojak - this was unfortunately a pretty terrible take on the dish. A pity because most everything else at Skyway is decent, if not awesome.

The salad includes cucumber, pineapple, jicama and is served with a super SUPER pungent shrimp paste-based sauce. Shrimp paste is mixed with sugar and water, chilies, and sometimes lime juice. They omitted the chili in this case and overdid the sugar.

Next up, Chow Kueh Teow. This dish makes me think of dad because we used to (and still do!) eat it together all the time. In Hawai'i, in Los Angeles, and even once in Paris and long long time ago. It's high on my list of favourite types of noodles dishes. But then again, I seem to have many "favourites" when it comes to noodles, hehehe. Sanur, another nearby Malaysian also does this dish, Skyway does a better job.

Here we have Poh Piah, which I think of as a Malaysian take on the Vietnamese summer roll. A filling of noodles, jicama, beansprouts are wrapped in lettuce, and then wrapped once more in a poh piah wrapper before a final drizzle of hoisin and chili sauce.

Our Mee Goreng, came fully equipped with a ton of fried tofu. Double win. Darien and Justin both preferred the egg noodles over the wide rice noodles. I like both, but wide rice noodles hold a soft spot in my heart for their tender floppiness and ability to soak up flavours like you'd never believe. Steamed, boiled in soup, stir-fried. You can do no wrong. Plus, they're so slippery and feel wonderfully easy in your mouth. Everything to love and nothing to hate.

Dessert? Of course! We kept it light at that meal with the full intention of heading to Rice to Riches afterward. Chendol is about as close as I'll get to Hawaiian shave ice in this city.

The dish is filled with a mix of jellies and beans, then topped off with shaved ice (rough-shaved, not Waiola's kind of bliss), and then a pour of sugar syrup and coconut milk.

Towards the end of dinner, Justin realized that Darien and I were seated against a rather odd (as far as Malaysian restaurants go) background. In place of a proper "back", our bench seats had a white picket fence. Pretty special, eh? Justin said, "pose!" And we did. Darien milked our family cows while I gazed off into greener pastures. We don't look convincing at all - but we tried, and that's all that matters :)

Bellies lined with happiness, we strolled over to the Rice to Riches in Soho. Note. This is a rice pudding store. But what they carry is not rice pudding in the traditional sense. Rice to Riches carries PUDDING with SOME RICE. Not rice pudding. There's a big difference. Nonetheless, I get intense craving for this place about once every two and half years.

The only way to cure it? Satisfy it! And so we did, with a bowl of "Fluent in French Toast" (left) and "Sex, Drugs, and Rocky Road" (right). So cheesy, I know.

How was it? Oh yah, pretty tasty :)

Happy Saturday!

Captain the Cactus

Post to come soon, but till then...look how tall my cactus has become! Captain was about this big when I brought him home from the Greenmarket back in August. He's grown a solid inch over the last six months. Yay for progress. Pretty flowers are dispensable, but to live without a cactus? Never! :)

My Goodness.

Cafe Sabarsky, Saturday Afternoon

It is really Thursday already?

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday...and now Thursday. A steady stream of blur work. But productivity is good. Very good.

Here's a little odd and end run-by of Saturday lunch. Hopefully (aka, when tax season is pau) I can muster up a full recap of this meal. Till then, a few photos and plenty of memories.

The morning opened with a sweet delivery of houjicha macarons and those awesome cheese shortbread from always cheerful Mitzy. I don't think I know a single soul in the world with more energy and enthusiasm!

Apologies if I looked all crazy in the morning Mitzy - I literally rolled out of bed, down the stairs and onto the street, pajamas and all ^_^

Erica came by the apartment an hour later, and a bit after that, Justin showed up for his weekend trip from Yale.

We lazed around for a bit before heading to Cafe Sabarsky for a midday meal. Thankfully, we arrived just before the lunch rush. A short five minute wait and we were quickly seated.

To begin, espresso.

Bread and Butter.

Palatschinken Mit Räucherforelle & Oberskren: Crêpes with smoked trout & horseradish crème fraîche. Closer.

Bratwurst Mit Sauerkraut & Röstkartoffeln: Roasted sausage with Riesling sauerkraut & roasted potatoes.

The accompanying hot mustard! So good! So good! This was Erica's dish, but it'll be mine on our next visit.

Spätzle Mit Schwammerln, Erbsen, Mais & Estragon: Spätzle with wild mushrooms, peas, sweet corn & tarragon. Closer.

The word "spätzle" entered my vocabulary in the fall of 2005. I lived in LA/Claremont at the time and stopped in NYC for a weekend trip. Dinner plans were arranged at Balthazar, and while I cannot recall what I ordered, I do remember her dish. Or at least one component. There was chicken involved, I believe. Anyhow, I remembered the most important part. The crispy spätzle.

I was flipping out. Little noodly esque nubbins fried, fried! I had never seen or eaten anything like it. Delightful bliss upon first bite. Much like my first Claude croissant, and SSS banana pudding. Grandma's dumplings, Boky's chicken curry noodles, Hearth's gnocchi and the gnudi from Spotted Pig. And I couldn't even pronounce spätzle correctly.

I never managed to find my way back to Balthazar since 2005, nor have I had spätzle elsewhere until Sabarsky. So this meal was essentially my second taste of spätzle. Wonderful and warming, but I think I still prefer spätzle fried :)

Justin and I parted ways with Erica post-lunch. We dashed down to the Theater in hopes of catching a performance of Chicago. Alas, we had forgotten that Valentine's Day would draw crowds to midtown and the theaters. What could we do but drowned our sorrows with an entertaining movie and a big bag of heavily buttered popcorn. Raisinets on the side.

Our dinner, hours later at Skyway, will follow in the next post ^_^

Oh! And...I bought my first DSLR :D Thank you Greg, for leading me through the ridiculous and fantastic maze that is B&H. Dad phoned me to say that I'm holding that camera all wrong...clearly I have much to learn.

Update from the Itzy Bitzy Files...

Mitzy will be dropping off a fresh batch macarons to Tafu tomorrow (aka Valentine's Day) morning. February's flavours are as follows: Coffee, Earl Grey, Champagne, Chocolate-Strawberry, Chocolate-Hazelnut, and my personal favourite, Houjicha. Tafu is usually sold out before the start of the weekend, though Mitzy is making a special delivery just for tomorrow.

Happy early Valentines ^_^

Good Morning, Good Evening

Sunday mornings start here. At Abraço.

With a cup of this.

And sometimes one or two more.

Sometimes I come alone, sometimes with a friend, but most often with Lauren. She likes her lattes :)

If weather permits, we'll sit outside for a bit. Lazzzy Sundays are for unwinding and catching air. On this particular Sunday, we dallied away time shopping on 9th Street. I love how this city, how my neighborhood in particular, is so accessible. Coffee on 7th. Shopping on 9th. Soft serve on 13th. Cake on 4th. Pizza every where between 12th and 14th.

I love how my own two feet can take me anywhere.

Parting ways in the afternoon, I rounded the corner on 10th to meet a friend who had chosen to spend his Sunday with a book and a latte. Hours past quick when you don't own a watch, and soon I found myself at dinner in Hell's Kitchen, and then rushing back downtown for dance class. I went home post-dance and organized life because dusk is the best time to gather thoughts.

Later that night, I met with Kathryn and Dan - the most awesome couple in the world. We dessert-ed over cups of soft serve - root beer float with brown butter solids for them, and a twist of graham and malted chocolate for myself.

Sundays are, indeed, the loveliest day of the week.

Saturday with Sunlight

Early morning yoga, followed by lunch with Greg (aka Greg of the Waffles) at The Adore. Serene, quiet, and full of sunlight. If yoga didn't already put me in such a fantastic mood, then the setting of this restaurant surely would have.

We scored a 2nd floor window seat facing 13th Street wallowed away the lunch hour with cups of coffee and bowls of soup.

Corn chowder and...

...potato leek.

We then moved onto sandwiches, uncomplicated numbers on toasted baguette. For myself: ham, avocado, melted cheese, mayonnaise, onions and tomatoes.

And for Greg: smoked salmon with mozzarella, cucumber, arugula and horseradish.

The food? All lovely, nothing exceptional nor extraordinary. The dewy sunlight though, was fantastic.

We parted post-lunch, and I went uptown to jazz dance the afternoon away. The dance studio is coincidentally located quite close to Bouchon Bakery. I swear, that pecan sticky bun called my name from afar.

I gave in.

Because you would be a silly fool to act otherwise.

Later that evening, I met Robyn and Jessica for dinner at the St Mark's Grand Sichuan. We shared a few dishes, making sure to save plenty of room for the dessert to come. First, dumplings in red chili oil.

Then pork soup dumplings followed by...

...sauteed pea shoots and...

...Chong Qing dry and spicy chicken. Make sure to read Robyn's Serious Eats New York post on this dish here.

Greg showed up at the end of the meal, and we trucked up sweets to his nearby apartment.

Jess had just come from her pastry session at culinary school and had plenty of bounty to share.

Tiramisu, Sacher Tortes...

...wedges of focaccia...

...and madelines! You simply have no idea how much I lovelovelove madelines.

As Jess and I devoured the sweets and savouries, we soon realized that the remaining half of our party had simply disappeared. Where to? It wasn't hard to find them - all we had to do we peek through the windows ^_^

Robyn had gone to the Brooklyn Flea Market earlier on in the day and returned with exceptionally delicious gifts from Mitzy, including a stash of her signature macarons...

...and a bag filled with ephemerally light gougère-esque puffs.

But the ones I love most were the savoury cheese shortbreads. Buttery, crumbly, and extravagantly rich.

We ate, and ate. Until we could eat no more. And then we paused.

And then Jess and I went out dancing.

It was a pretty good Saturday to say the least :)

On another matter, I still can't seem to get those song lyrics out of my head...

"Is that all there is, is that all there is.
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing.
Let's break out the booze and have a ball.
If that's all there is."

For the better, perhaps? Keeping it on repeat throughout the day induces a sort of calm, why not, why not, just chill sensibility.

Happy Tuesday night / Wednesday morning :)

P.S.
Welcome back home Darien!!

Shann Sent Me Porn.

Malassada porn ;)

She was lucky enough to fly home for the 2009 Punahou Carnival and surely ate her share of malassadas, in addition to teri-burgers and taco salad. It's been FIVE years since I last attended my high school carnival. The malassadas, piping hot, sugar-dusted, super crunchy on the outside and all melty, eggy on the inside and SO CRAZY CRAZY DELICIOUS, alone are worth the flight to Hawai'i. Ok. Next year. Tax season or not. I am going home for malassadas.

My goodness. I think I just slobbered all over the computer.

Happy Monday!

Two Things

Spam Musubis from Marie's potluck party, December 2008

1. Punahou Carnival Post from Pomai -> The MALASSADAS look so good.

::weepies::

It's chilly in NYC tonight.

I hope dad bought extra and popped some in the freezer for my next trip back :D

2. I've had The Supremes, "Where Did Our Love Go," on repeat this whole weekend. But now I've moved on. I tend to do things like that. Listen to one song over and over again for any period of time ranging from two days to three months. Then move to another, fondly storing the old in the back of my mind.

As a result, I am not familiar with many songs. But those I know, I know very well. On repeat now: Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" I might actually like the Bette Midler version a touch more.

"Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is"

Hope your weekend was as lovely as mine ^_^

FuerzaBruta and Some Pizza

FuerzaBruta, Friday Performance

How can it already be Sunday night? The weekends are much too short! These past two days involved what felt like non-stop dancing from Friday to Sunday evening. Dancing in all settings. Theatre. Broadway Studio. Club. Classroom Studio. My apartment - does that count? ;) It feels fantastic to move.

I studied a good deal of modern dance in college. And then stopped once I graduated and moved to NYC. I didn't realize just how much I missed dancing until a few months ago. We're bringing it all baacck.

Photos from Friday's performance of FuerzaBruta with Robyn, Diana, and Lee Anne.

The interactive show involved a good deal of standing, moving, and dancing.

Theater meets acrobatics. With awesome music (thanks for the CD, Diana! :)

The show concludes with a little surprise involving a good deal of water. We left very happy and soaking wet. Stomachs craving something greasy and satisfying, we strolled our dripping selves in the cold down to Artichoke. Pizza time.

One Sicilian pie to go...back to my apartment, conveniently around the corner. Thank you, Lee Anne for venturing back out to pick up the pie!

Oh! Oh man, have you guys see the movie, A Christmas Story? You must have! Anyways, remember the leg lamp? Well. They HAVE THE LAMP at Artichoke. How crazy is that. Robyn and Diana each caught a separate shot of me in utter awe. The lamp is. So. Awesome.

We stuffed our faces. Fiddled with my hat collection. And did, you know, stuff.

More food to follow soon...

Itzy Bitzy in February

It's just past midnight. I am home. And cannot put down these macarons. I am biased, but at least that is disclosed, right? ;)

Mitzy's
new flavours for the month:

Chocolate-Strawberry Macaron

Champange Macaron

Earl Grey Macaron

Mango Macaron

Coffee Macaron

Chocolate-Hazelnut Macaron

Mitzy also brought by a few little bites...Chocolate Sables and...

...crazy, crazy good Cheese Shortbread. Neither are for sale yet, but eye candy never hurt anyone ;)

That song I mentioned this morning is still stuck in my head. Stuck in a good way. I don't think I could ever tire of it, especially these few lines...

"...I've got this yearning, burning
Yearning feelin' inside me
Ooh, deep inside me
And it hurts so bad..."

So catchy!

Steph is off to Berkeley and Hawai'i tomorrow - have a safe flight and good luck with interviews :) Steph: if you hear someone singing in the middle of the night, that would be me in the next room over, sleep-singing. Thank you for knitting me that awesome hat. It keeps me warm when you tell me the wrong weather report. Which you often do. Eat lots of malassadas when you're home, please.

Close The Page If You Want Food. Today Is For Non-Edible Smatterings.

Manoa, Honolulu, Hawai'i

I've had this song stuck in my head for the last few days. Couldn't figure out the title, couldn't figure out the singer(s). Steph proved utterly useless in her midnight attempts to help, but did pour me a lovely glass of wine. She also fried up some salt and pepper potatoes. So tasty.

Granted, my weepy offerings of "you know, that song? that song with a beat? It goes, baby, baby, don't you ever leave me..." proved less than helpful.

"Oooh, THAT ONE"
"Yeah! you know it?"
"I think you have the lyrics wrong though...isn't it, baby, baby, please don't go without me?"
"really?"

We googled everything to death as Elton John played in the background along with the Slow Loris video on repeat. We were briefly distracted from the song search when Steph suggested we get a Slow Loris for the apartment.

"You think?"
"Yeah! Look how big their eyes are! Why not?"

So now we have that possibility to ponder.

Meanwhile, I had another tab (thank god for tabs, eh? ;) opened to jazz dance shoes, and another to Tin Tin comics on Ebay. We covered a lot of ground last night, including a discussion on the rather provocative shots featured in recent Urban Outfitters' catalogs.

(Shann and Darien, we miss you! :)

This time of the year (aka, tax season) makes you go just a little crazy. Long hours leave me worried that I'll abandon the rest of my personal life for excel documents.

Where's that third glass of wine?

We failed to figure out the song. But the evening closed off at a reasonably sane hour. It felt good to get more than fours hours of sleep.

I still have to put my new camera together.

Anyways. I emailed Shann this morning in regards to the song. She's good with stuff like that. And by "stuff," I mean figuring out sense from my non-sense.

"its a female singer and goes
"Baby, Baby...don't you ever leave me..."
da da dumh
and its like beat-y
steph knows what i mean, but she thinks the lyrics are different"

Shann responds an hour later (in Hawai'i time nonetheless!)

Shann (1:10:19 PM): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izzKUoxL11E
Shann(1:10:20 PM): ???

And indeed, it's the Supremes - Where Did Our Love Go?

I have it on repeat. Man, I love this song.

Friday is tomorrow! :D

P.S.
Those in Hawai'i better take advantage of the Punahou Carnival malassadas this weekend!!

Loco Moco / I Hope All This Jumping...

...around between NYC and Hawai'i posts isn't confusing. If I possessed any proper sense of organization I would have finished all my Hawai'i meals before trekking back east. Regardless, I cannot help but move as my whims call :)

Today, we're back for lunch at Jack's in Aina Haina.

Above, the "daily" specials. "Daily" is used quotations because I am fairly sure that the specials board has not changed since my last visit in summer 2008 :)

I like to start off my meals here - whether they be breakfast or lunch (Jack's is closed for dinner) with a hot biscuit and honey butter. For lack of better words, the honey butter is SO GOOD. So Good. We could easily make this at home - whip butter with streams of honey. But as someone who used to slice chunks of salted butter for midday "snacks," I don't trust myself with such a task. There would be no more butter left to slather on biscuits by the time I was done whipping.

They never give enough butter. So I always have to ask for more. And they are always happy to give. Meals at Jack's are always a happy affair.

Mom had the Portuguese sausage fried rice with a fried egg on top...

...while I went with chili-rice. Rainbow's Drive-In and Zippy's makes the best local chili as far as my experiences run. But oh, while we're on the subject of chili, check out this photo Dan posted of Kathyrn's chili. Now that is what I'll be craving on a chilly (no pun intended, haha) day.

The chili proved decent enough to hold my attention...UNTIL...until, until, until...Dad's loco moco came out.

I shoved my plate aside and aimed my fork in the direction of his plate.

Dad knowingly smiled, "what? wish you had ordered something else?" Being the awesome person he is, dad cut me a massive share of his loco moco. Mounds of hot rice, hamburger patty, grilled onions and mushrooms topped with a fried egg. And Then. Gravy. All. Over.

Cholesterol counts do not exist in our universe.

This was supposed to be the loco moco upskirt shot, but everything is doused in brown gravy so it all looks the same in the end. As good as it was, the gravy was severe overkill. Cinnamon's in Kailua portions everything just right. After years of breakfast and lunch visits, it's easy to conclude that breakfast is definitely Jack's stronger suit. While lunch here will never wrong you, it also will never impress. The pancakes though, speak of dreamy wonders.

Post-Jack's we took a trip down to Gecko's in Kaimuki where I proceeded to wiped out of all the used Archie Comics they had in stock. I've been collecting these comic books since 2nd grade, much thanks to my parents for funding this silly habit. Dad was pretty sure I'd grow out of them by the time middle school came around...

...we're still waiting for that day, haha. Gecko's is my go-to source for comic books in Hawai'i. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember, scouring the ratty cardboard boxes for old comics. Sometimes I'll get the new comics - but the stories in those aren't nearly as exciting as the comics from the early 90s. I get my plastic covers here too. And have never seen another female in the shop. Which disturbs me a bit. But. Oh well, as long as I have a steady supply of comics, all is good.

Otto, Thrice in a Weekend...

...not surprising, given that this is the one restaurant I could dine at for every meal of the day, yet crave it for the next. I found myself at Otto for Saturday lunch with Kate, and then hours later, for Saturday dinner. I slept very well that night!

And on Sunday, despite the many lunch options Greg and I pondered, it was Otto that made the most sense. There is comfort in consistency.

Below, a little round-up of the meals. If you'd rather pass on the words for photos, here's my Otto Flickr set.

...I had the same Rigatoni with Sausage, Escarole, and Garlic dish twice. It just might replace the Carbonara as my new favourite (for this week at least, heehee). ^_^

The special pasta of the week: Bucatini alla Pastora.

Sformato di Parmigiano. This dish makes me all warm and happy inside, especially with a quartino of a bold red. Hopefully they'll bring back the Sformato Di Zucca when Autumn swings around once more.

And of course, no proper Otto meal ends without gelato. Above, Meyer Lemon Huckleberry Swirl Gelato, Blood Orange Sorbet, and Creme Fraiche Gelato. I don't recall how long the Creme Fraiche has been on the menu, but Saturday was the first time I've had this flavour and it is absolutely wonderful. After eating more than my share of gelato trios, I think the ideal combination consists of Olive Oil, Salty Caramel, and Creme Fraiche Gelato. The sorbets are in another world of their own, but I'm not the greatest fan of mixing sorbet and gelato in the same cup.

Here we have the Olive Oil with the Meyer Lemon Huckleberry Swirl, and Hazelnut Stracciatella Gelato...

...and finally Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut Stracciatella Gelato, and Blood Orange Sorbet. Yes there are numerous repeats, but can you really blame me? Perhaps I would have more variety to show you if I had gone back for dinner tonight :)

The only gelato flavour they can never get right at Otto is pistachio. So. Pistachio aside, all else is heaven.
